Coping With a Breakup
If you’re going through a breakup right now, you probably feel like you’re riding a roller coaster of emotions. You might miss your ex at the same time you’re relieved their gone. You might feel lighter inside, but you might find yourself struggling with the intense emotions that come with a breakup. You’re trying to navigate this new identity and this new chapter of your life. You might be asking yourself “Who am I without them?” You may wonder what you’re gonna do without them.
Here’s What You’re Going to do Without Them
It is so important to take care of yourself right now, because your body and mind need it. The most important thing is to be gentle with yourself, and to do kind things for yourself. Below are just a few ideas of things you can do:
Book a spa treatment
You deserve a gentle spa treatment, and you deserve to relax your body and mind for a while. Whether it’s a facial, a massage, or spending time in a sauna, investing in yourself can give you some relief from the pain. If you’re concerned about finances, you can always get a Groupon deal, or go someplace with lower pricing.
Take a vacation
Start planning for your dream vacation- that one vacation you were never able to take with your ex. This is the perfect time to practice alternate rebellion. Research different flights and hotels and compare pricing. Many places will even let you do payment plans. A lot of larger hotels and airlines even have points programs, so you can get discounts. But you have the freedom to travel now. So go for it.
Exercise
Take a fitness class or do an at home on demand workout. Moving your body in a way that feels good will make you feel so much more confident and empowered! Plus, it will feel so good just to take that time for yourself. It’s important to take care of both your body and mind right now.
Schedule an extra session with your therapist
During this time, you want to give yourself as much support as possible. If needed, schedule one or several extra sessions with your therapist. You deserve support and strategies to add to your toolbox, and therapy can help you process your feelings around the breakup. You don’t have to go through this alone.
Make a list of reasons why you had to break up
If you make a list of reasons why you had to break up, you can look at it when you start to miss your ex. It will remind you of why the relationship needed to end, and make you realize life can be so much better on the other side. You’ll also realize that the breakup makes room for someone who can meet your needs to come into your life.
Spend time with your girls
Talking about it with your girlfriends will make you feel SO validated and supported! You don’t have to go through it alone, and if they’re really your friends, they will support you. You deserve the support you need right now.
Remember, You’re Not Alone
Breakups can be SO painful, and you don’t have to go through it alone. If you find that you’re turning back to self destructive patterns, or old thought patterns are coming back, please seek support. If you find yourself in a crisis, please call 988 or text the Crisis Text Line at 741741. Both of these resources have counselors available 24/7, and can provide referrals to a therapist you can see more regularly if needed. If you need a higher level of care right now, don’t be afraid to seek that support, because you will get validation, understanding, and support from other people who’ve been through similar things. So much help is available, and you don’t have to go through this alone.
If you’re going through a breakup right now, I’m here to help you feel empowered and confident again!
